Microsoft DRM Expands To Cell Phones With PlayReady

“The result of extended dialogue with the mobile industry,” PlayReady offers PlaysForSure DRM for mobile phones.  This is not to be confused with Zune DRM which at least today will not work on a mobile phone.  PacketVideo vowed to be the first company to implement this content access technology.

PlayReady will be a licensable technology allowing any service that offers Microsoft’s current DRM solution to offer PlayReady DRM.

Because this is Microsoft and things are complex I feel it necessary to point out this is NOT the same DRM (called information rights management ) that exists on Windows Mobile 6 which began to roll out today on AT&T, Verizon, Spring, and T-Mobile.  Windows Mobile 6 is compatible with Yahoo, Rhapsody, and Urge, but it is unclear to me at least if it now supports subscription content, a feature lacking in Windows Mobile 5.
