How To Set Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) to be Secure, and Private on Windows 7

The Default Values in Internet Explorer 8 ( IE8 ) as they ship for Vista and Windows 7 Leave a lot to be desired.  As such I recommend doing the following steps after install, or if you have already done an install, choose “Reset” from the Tools –> Internet Options –> Advanced  and then configuring as stated below.

The First time you run it, IE8 will ask you if you want to use Suggested Sites.  Because this sends all of the sites you visit to Microsoft I advise selecting no.

Next you need to choose to customize your Default Settings, you will want to choose, or you get some weird options.

You likely don’t want Live.com Search so select the lower option.

Unless you have a reason you want the “accelerators” on, all they do is slow down your Browser, so select Turn Off All, unless you use the Translator, or other options a lot.

If you want Microsoft to know every site you went to turn this on, if not set it to off.

You probably don’t want Compatibility View Updates, for the same reasons as above, besides I’m going to have you lock IE 8 in IE7 view anyway so it won’t matter.
