Rock Brands Complain about their Portrayal in Band Hero

Gwen Stefani and her band "No Doubt" are suing Activision Blizzard Inc over how they appear in the game Band Here.

Band Hero is similar to Guitar Hero or Rock Band, but allows for multiple players.  A feature of the game allows you to play any song as "No Doubt" Or "Nirvana".  Gwen Stefani was less than happy to be singing the Rolling Stones "Honky Tonk Woman" as in the game she appears singing in a male voice "boasting about having sex with prostitutes".

Gwen isn’t the only one upset.  Courtney Love, widow to Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, criticized Activision for using Cobain’s likeness in "Guitar Hero 5" in ways that she did not approve of, including singing songs from other bands.

Activision says the are with in their rights.  Clearly Gwen Stefani’s brand manager didn’t do a good job reading the contract before they signed up to do the deal.  The Beatles Rock Band Contract required that the likenesses of the band could only be used with their songs.

Activision’s "Guitar Hero" game, which was launched in 2005 has grossed over $2 billion.
