The shiny new penny has a redesigned reverse for the US One Cent Piece. The coin features a union shield with 13 vertical stripes with a scroll draped across it that reads “One Cent.”
The front of the penny continues to portray the original profile image of Lincoln. The Lincoln was first introduced in 1909, one hundred years ago.
The Lincoln Memorial was placed on the reverse of the one cent penny in 1959 replacing the original design “wheat penny” reverse.
Did you know: the penny costs the US Mint more than one cent to produce.
