Idol Talk: Ladies’ Night?
by Vera H-C Chan
Simon Cowell tried to send one “American Idol” contestant into exile… but did his criticism work?
Renditions of movie theme songs on performance night left judges with mixed feelings about some favorites (Danny Gokey). A dark horse (Allison Iraheta) was also declared and a death watch began for Lil Rounds, whose R&B-infused version of “The Rose” left judge Cowell remarkably unimpressed. But, he had already called Iraheta the hope of the remaining women, and with only two left, the math’s not hard to figure out.
Speaking of women, ladies remain the core faithful for the family-friendly Fox reality competition. Last season, the fans who followed the show most online were ages 30-54. This year, the breakdown still skews female (66%), and now they may be older (30-64).
So, on the premise that reality TV cougars will strongly influence the vote, a look at Tuesday night searches among women show a strong jump to Lil Rounds’ defense. (If you throw in searches from men and young’uns, Iraheta has the advantage). She also jumps ahead of Matt Giraud.
Are the ladies merely rubbernecking at this early favorite’s possible end? One thing’s for sure: Adam Lambert continues to have a ridiculously huge lead.
