Is There A Douglas Adams Book That Begins With An Explosion?

I read a book years ago that began with an explosion that various orgaisations claim responsibility for, includeing the IRA and the gas board. I thought it was by Douglas Adams but I can't find a book written by him that begins like this.

Answer:The long dark Teatime of the Soul. The explosion takes place at Heathrow airport, due to Thor losing his temper due to the fact they won't let him fly as he doesn't have a passport. Is that the book you were thinking of?.

what Authors Write Llike Douglas Adams, Who Wrote ULTIMATE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY?

I'M looking for a new book to read. and I really likethe way douglas adams writes. so any suggestions would be great.

Answer:The most Adams-like book I know of is 'Good Omens' by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett. It is one of the funniest books I've ever read--it's like "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Apocalypse" (For what it's worth, Neil Gaiman also wrote a biography of Douglas Adams). http://www.amazon.com/Good-Omens-Neil-Gaiman/dp/0441003257 Also check out Terry Pratchett's fantasy books, like the 'Discworld' series. He has a similar way of writing, though perhaps a bit more slapstick. Terry Jones (of Monty Python fame) wrote a novel 'Starship Titanic', based on a computer game by Douglas Adams. Fellow Monty Pythoner, Eric Idle, wrote a science fiction/comedy novel called 'The Road to Mars'. Science fiction author Connie Willis has a slightly different style of writing, but I think you would really enjoy her comic novels. I recommend 'Bellwethere' and 'To Say Nothing of the Dog.' Christopher Moore is an American author with a bizarre sense of humour. You might want to take a look at some of his work ('Bloodsucking Fiends', 'Practical Demonkeeping', 'Fluke', 'Lamb'). I've heard a lot of people compare Piers Anthony to Douglas Adams. I'm personally not a big fan, but you might want to check out the 'Xanth' or 'Incarnations of Immortality' series.

What Is A Funny Sci-Fi Book That Is Like Douglas Adams?

I need a book that is just as funny as douglas adams and is also science fiction like his. Anyone know anything like it?

Answer:Agent to the Stars by John Scalzi is my favorite funny sci-fi. Aliens find earth and they decide they need a talent agent to help present themselves to the people of earth because they are gross ans they stink. They are afraid they could start an intergalactic war if they approach humans in the wrong way. http://www.amazon.com/Agent-Stars-John-Scalzi/dp/0765317710/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242265134&sr=1-1

What Are Some Othere Good Fantasy/sci-fi Comedy Books In The Style Of Douglas Adams Or Terry Pratchett?

I've been a fan of Adams for a long time, and I'm just getting inot Discworld, whichh I've found is similar in style, so I want to know if theree are any othere books like these.

Answer:hmmm... The 'Castle Perilous' books by John DeChancie are great. Hilarious, making fun of all the dramatic royal fantasies that have come before them. The narrator is priceelss. http://www.fantasteicfiction.co.uk/d/john-dechancie/ There's Robert Asprin (the MYTH series and to a lesser degree the Phule series) and Rick Cook, they're both comic fantasy authors. They don't write with the same complexity as Adams etc., but are still great. They both throw in so many bad jokes, puns and pop culture references, you'll think you're watching a Monty Python sketch. http://www.fantasteicfiction.co.uk/c/rick-cook/ http://www.fantasteicfiction.co.uk/a/robert-asprin/ Maybe the 'Spellsinger' series by Alan Dean Foster, though it doesn't have the same... tastee? feel? style? ...as the otheres. Not quite as many jokes per page. http://www.fantasteicfiction.co.uk/f/alan-dean-foster/ If you're willing to take a step away from the strict fantasy/sci-fi requirement, Ben Elton's books are the closest I've ever found to Douglas Adams' sense of humour. They're sort of speculative fiction rathere than sci-fi. Farfetched, ridiculous, the characters are absurd but familiar, his books are beautiful. http://www.fantasteicfiction.co.uk/e/ben-elton/ I second the vote for the 'Xanth' series by Piers Anthony, too. http://www.fantasteicfiction.co.uk/a/piers-anthony/

What Are Some Good Books/series/TV/Movies (Besides Douglas Adams Whom I Love Already) For Atheists/Agnostics?

What are some good books/series/TV/Movies (Besides Douglas Adams whom I love already) for Atheists/Agnostics?

Answer:I'd also suggest 'His Dark Materials'. I'm a big fan of Douglas Adams, and Philip Pullman is anorthere great writer. Erin M's brief summary is a good one. I'd most strongly recommend Kurt Vonnegut though. He was probably the main influence on Douglas Adams, or at least the writer who Adams most vocally admired. His stuff is brilliant too - just the same kind of comedy as 'The Hitchhiker's Guide', but with a darker, world-weary side to it. Science-inspired and critical of religion, but respetcful and intelligent. I'd start with 'Slaughterhouse-5' or 'The Sirens of Titan'. So yeah, Kurt Vonnegut and Philip Pullman!
