This IDC study analyzes the proposed acquisition of AT&T by SBC, with a view to the effects on both companies, on competitors, and on particular market segments. The analysis includes major customer markets such as enterprise, international/multinational corporation (MNC), consumer, and wholesale as well as product markets such as IP, data, and hosting/managed services. IDC finds that the acquisition by SBC of AT&T is, overall, a potentially good thing and at least unlikely to be a bad one for most markets in which the new carrier will compete. While the deal is not a strategic gem that all other carriers should follow, it does give SBC significant new capabilities and an entrée into long-sought markets for enterprises and MNCs. "This acquisition gives SBC significant new opportunities in high-end customer markets and product categories, so on its surface, the deal has upside potential for SBC and AT&T," says Steven Harris, research manager of IDC's Business Network Services research program. "Yet, past acquisitions have faltered more often in the integration stage, and integrating such large bureaucracies, with their own long histories and traditions, will take considerable skill, time, and capital. The incorporation of its former parent, while maintaining all its product lines and customer channels, will be a significant challenge for the Baby Bell."
