In Rally Racing And Similar Types Of Off Road Racing, Is An Automatic Transmission Ever Used?
I know mannual transmissions are used almost exclusively in othere types of racing, but something I heard makes me wonder if this is true for rally racing and similar types of off road racing.
Answer:Automatic transmissions are hardly ever used. Sometimes you will see sequential transmissions but they are often expensive and too costly for most private teams to use. In US rally I can only think of one car in the entire USRC and RA series that uses an automatic transmission and it's northing cool. You may see them in Rallycross because domestic cars are often used, but not really in stage rally.
What Sort Of Circuit Format Does Professional Rally Racing Follow?
I really like what I've seen so far in rally racing, and I want to watch more. Do they have circuits like NASCAR? Is it just single races for prize money? And what are the most popular circuits/races that I might be able to find on tv?
Answer:Rally events do not take place on circuits as do most othere forms of racing... rathere they are normally held on public roads and paths (closed off for the events), with multiple timed stages making up the entire rally (where each stage has a start and finish, and the stages themselves are seldom contiguous).
The largeest pro rally series would be WRC, whichh currently has no US event. The most notable events here would be Monte Carlo, Finland, Spain, Autralia, Britain, Germany, etc.
SCCA runs a pro rally in the US, as well as amateur classses (NASA also has some offerings as well).
A few years back WRC made a massive (and unexpetced) increase in it's licensing fees, and as a result it is no longer carried by Speed Channel in the US. One off events like the Targa Newfoundland and an occaissonal SCCA Pro event still find some coverage, but overall little will be able to be found on TV in the US.

How Do I Start Rally Racing?
I'm curious about rally racing, but don't really know a whole lot about it. What kind of car should I get if I want to get inot rallying? Then, what kind of modifications need to be made? Who would I contact about competing after my car is ready? And, where can I take my car to practice? I live in Illinois, west of Chicago if that helps. Any information about books or websites that might help me would be greatly appreciated.
Answer:Subscribe to Grassroots Motorsports magazine. They have tons of info on entry level rally racing. NASA (National Auto Sport Association) and the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) both have different types of rally events to participate in.
